Candidiasis is the term used to describe a condition that is due to an infection arising from the presence of a member of the Candida family of fungi (yeasts). Although there are 20 known members of the Candida family, the vast majority of human infections are due to the family member known as Candida albicans. These fungi are usually present on the human skin but do not cause an infection as long as the skin itself remains intact and unbroken.
A particular form of candidiasis, known as "thrush," is commonly seen in infants or young children.
Mechanisms of Candidiasis
Since it is a fungus, Candida albicans will thrive in an environment that is warm, moist, and not exposed to direct sunlight. As mentioned above cadidiasis occurs whenever a fungi that is normally present on the skin (Cadida) is able to exploit a breakdown in one of the body's means of protecting itself from infection such as the skin, mucus membranes (such as those lining the mouth, the rectal cavity or, in women, the vagina), or even when the bodies immune system is compromised.
There are many physical causes of breaks in the skin itself. Among the more common causes are small abrasions caused by clothing (particularly underwear) that does not fit properly, abrasions due to mechanical trauma such as falls, or even sexual intercourse. A less common means by which Candida can penetrate the skin or mucus membranes is via some medical device such as a urinary catheter or intravenous line that remains in place over a relatively long period of time.
There are also a number of conditions that may limit the response of the body's primary disease-fighting mechanism, the immune system, to the presence of Candida. In addition to the well-known AIDS/HIV infections, those that have suffered significant burns or major trauma are at particular risk of developing infections with Candida or any number of otherwise relatively harmless organisms. Additionally, the less-than-optimal immune systems of infants and the elderly place these age groups at an increased risk of fungal infections.
Signs and Symptoms of Candidiasis
In medicine, a "sign" of a condition is some physical indication that is associated with presence of that condition. Signs of candidiasis include the presence of a white or pearl-colored discharge from the vagina (the most common sign of candidiasis in women), the presence of similarly colored patches of material in the mouths and/or throats of children ("thrush"), or patches seen on areas of the body that are normally warm and moist.
Symptoms, on the other hand, are sensations perceived by the patient. Symptoms associated with candidiasis include itching and burning involving those parts of the body commonly involved with Candida growth such as the vagina, labia, or rectum. In candidiasis, the association between the specific signs and symptoms is sometimes considered sufficient for diagnosis.
Treatment and Prognosis
In the majority of cases, prompt treatment of candidiasis with an appropriate antibiotic is sufficient and the condition promptly resolves. However, if the immune system is compromised the condition is much more serious and may become difficult to control and may become life threatening even with the best of medical care.
